Jay Michaels Staying Focused on the Caribbean

Popular radio and television host and producer Jay Michaels staying focused on the Bahamas.

November 7, 2004 -- Popular radio and television host and producer Jay Michaels remains focused on the Bahamas. We've all heard the jingles about the island nation with some of the most pristine waters in the Caribbean. A place where turtles, dolphins and stingrays dance to the delight of the tourists who unearth this gem which lies only a stone skip from Miami.

While working with the Bahamas and promoting tourism, Jay Michaels also became familiar with the culture and many of the merchants of the Bahamas. Jay found in the Bahamas a people rich with tradition, values and who had a passion for life that is not found in many places of the world.

When you talk to Jay about the state of broadcasting today in the United States he will tell you the same thing, "I cannot point a finger at the success of the broadcast industry in this Country today, it is more successful than it has ever been however it has become a business of formulas and is not as much seat of the pants as it once was!" In other words broadcasting, like so many other industries, has become more calculated and researched taking away much of the risk taking.

Jay was fortunate enough to have started his career in a day when the radio and television industry was one that went on "gut" and "pure instinct" a time when it was "fun" to do what we do. We learned about our marketplace from being out among the people, we did not have the luxury of focus groups, rating services, music research, the things that make up "present day" radio and television.

After careful consideration Jay Michaels still looks at the Caribbean and the Bahamas as a market where someone of his background can take a step back in time and do radio and television like it once was however with the advantage of today's technology twist. Michaels will be the first to tell you the advancements we have made in technology have created an easier environment in which to work. With the advancements made in the industry, Jay Michaels believes that small operators can still go into places like the Bahamas, make a good living and enjoy a quality of life that is only reserved for a favored few. Of course the numbers generated are not attractive to the major broadcast companies however for an independent operator a lean operation can be run while enjoying success with an emphasis on having fun once again!

Now, while many enjoy the two-plus hour commutes on a crowded freeway in search of the American Dream, and that is fine for many, Jay feels that he can take his knowledge, his expertise and his talent to a much smaller marketplace and be satisfied both professionally and personally.

The Caribbean marketplace, like the Bahamas, cannot be compared to some small remote town in the States. In this scenario we are talking about "world class" tourist destinations with an audience that is literally worldwide. Basically it is a "small market" with a style and sophistication unto its own. As you may have heard or read recently Jay Michaels has been involved in several projects involving advertising and marketing plans that were directed to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Jay Michaels has a passion about doing business in the Bahamas and developing something fresh. In speaking with Jay about recent hurricanes he said, "The Bahamian people are vibrant and quickly rebuild, if mother nature gets in their way as tourism is their number one industry so they cannot afford to be anything but resilient."

The attitude of many has been "who cares about those places other than to take a vacation?" For that he is extremely happy that more do not want to be a present day "Christopher Columbus" and discover what he has found. Jay feels that the Caribbean is more than just a place for fun and sun but a destination that offers a quality of life and the freedom to do business without the pressures of present day city life.

If all goes according to plan Jay will also be inviting his friends from the entertainment industry to come and share their talents in a land that many only dream of! Jay Michaels has hosted and produced shows with world renowned recording artists and Celebrities for the Cruise industry and throughout the Caribbean and wants to continue to do so.

So stay tuned as you may be hearing that Jay Michaels has finally put in a change of address in the Bahamas and as Jay has jokingly expressed many times, "if you live anywhere else, but the Bahamas, you are simply just camping out!"

A tropical ocean breeze, a lazy day hammock, water lapping against the boat, a cool drink and good music on the radio, now who could ask for anything more?

We'll see you on the radio!
